University News (By Gan Tian, Zhang Feiwu) Recently, the College of Automotive Engineering at our university has achieved another significant milestone in undergraduate scientific innovation. Zhang Feiwu, an undergraduate student majoring in New Energy Vehicle Engineering (Class of 2022), has made notable progress in the study of space-confined nanocatalysts. Conducted under the careful guidance of Dr. Lü Siliu from the Hubei Key Laboratory of Automotive Power Transmission and Electronic Control, this research was carried out in collaboration with scientific teams from Zhejiang University, Jilin University, and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea.

The related findings have been published in the internationally renowned top-tier chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition (a CAS Q1 TOP journal with an Impact Factor of 16.9). The paper, entitled“Space‐Confined Electrocatalysis for Water Splitting: Synthesis, Performances, and Reaction Mechanism of Nanomaterials Toward High‐Performance Catalysis,”features Zhang Feiwu as the first author, with Hubei University of Automotive Technology listed as the first affiliation.

This accomplishment marks another breakthrough where a second-year undergraduate from the college has published as the first author in a leading international journal.

This paper systematically sorts out the research hotspots and key challenges of spatial confinement electrocatalysis in the field of water splitting, focuses on low-cost and high-efficiency green hydrogen production technology, and conducts an in-depth analysis of the future development directions and challenges of nano-catalysts.

This research achievement relies on the advanced equipment and interdisciplinary platforms of the university’s Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory. It closely centers on cutting-edge fields such as new energy vehicle power systems and hydrogen production and storage, fully highlighting the effectiveness of the university’s "scientific research-oriented education" system.

The School of Automotive Engineering has always attached great importance to the cultivation of undergraduates' scientific research and innovation ability, actively integrated high-quality education resources, built an education team led by doctoral class teachers, and empowered students' scientific research and academic development. In the future, the college will continue to build a multi-level and diversified scientific research practice platform for undergraduates, and is committed to cultivating a group of high-quality innovative talents with "solid foundation, innovative thinking, and international vision", serving national strategic needs and promoting scientific and technological progress in the industry, and contributing more "automobile institute wisdom" and "automobile institute strength".
