On the afternoon of June 29, a lecture about sharing the experience of studying and living at University of Bolton, UK was presented by visiting teachers back from the university. The lecture was organized by international cooperation and exchange office and teachers’ development center. More than 30 teachers attended the lecture.
After a brief overview of Britain's education system and introduction to various educational diplomas and certificates, Ms. Jin Yang, from school of automotive engineering, centered around UK’s higher educational quality control system and details about the program of vehicle performance engineering of University of Bolton, such as developing plans, course outlines, designs, evaluations and exams etc. She also spoke highly of the university’s significant attention to its students’ internship and strong hands-on abilities.
Ms. Zheng Dongli, also from school of automotive engineering, gave a general introduction to University of Bolton and it’s program setting, student's learning state, teaching characteristics, etc. She gave special reference to the curriculum evaluation of the University, a popular grading system adopted by many universities abroad, normally performed by operations (reports), 3-4 for one student a school year. The operations attached importance to documents quotations, which helped a lot in improving students’ independent learning abilities and “also of a great reference value to the reform of teaching models for of HUAT.
Mr. Ma Chun Jiang, another teacher from school of electrical and information engineering gave a report entitled “My understanding of studying and living abroad” in fluent English. In his understanding, oral English is very important for one studying and living abroad and how to improve his oral English in a short time. Unlike some other English learners, he didn’t think it useful to improve one’s oral English by doing testing papers, listening to English songs, watching English films and plays or reading English newspapers or novels, instead, the best and quickest way improve one’s English is to look for chances to talk with foreigners from English speaking countries or someone whose English is better than he or she is, to put English practice into his or her lives. Compared with grammar and pronunciation, he attaches more importance to the practice of Chinese into English.
Ms. Wubing, vice CUC of HUAT also attended the lecture. She said after listening to the lecture that she harvested a lot and what the lectures talked about had reference value for new round of revision of personnel training programs. We should think more about what courses are suitable for our students and what we can draw from the advanced ideas abroad.
