HUAT is going through undergraduate program evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education and Hubei Provincial Educational Department. Mr. Jiang Gefu, head of the evaluation expert group, also professor and former vice president of Southwest Jiaotong University together with other members of the group had a short interview with all the leaders of HUAT and college deans this morning, announcing commencement of the evaluation.

The meeting was presided by Mr. Li Xiangnong, deputy head of the expert group, also professor and former vice president of Central China Normal University.

At the beginning of the interview, Mr. Li introduced all the members of the evaluation group one by one. Except the two mentioned above, the other members are Mr. Sun Congzheng, professor and former Party Secretary of Beijing University of Technology, Mr. Li Rutao, professor and former president of Hubei University of Arts and Science, Mr. Li Yan, professor and vice president of Xi’an University of Technology, Mr. Wu Huaiyu, professor and vice president of Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Mr. Zhang Yinjiang, professor and vice president of Hubei University of Science and Technology, Mr. Luo Jinyin, professor and vice president of Wuhan Textile University, Mr. Mei Jinchun, professor and director teaching department of Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Mr, Mr. Wang Zhongyong, professor and director of teaching department of Zhengzhou University and other officials from Hubei Provincial educational department.

Professor Jiang Gefu, head of the expert group explained how the evaluation would be carried out during the period. He said there was a big change between what was going to be evaluated this time and that had been done in the past. The bigger difference is that guided by the evaluation systems set by the Ministry of Education, the experts would evaluate all the teaching activities, descriptions and statistics presented by the evaluated university, meaning making judgments according to what a university had done in the past few years. In theory, there were five measuring scales ranging from the level of the university to colleges, departments and academic programs, focusing on four points like “what is said”, “how to accomplish it”, “what is the effect” and “Existing problems”. He hoped that all the relevant staff could offer reasonable answers to all the questions related to the four points.  

Professor Jiang Gefu pointed out that all the staff should take it a chance for HUAT to review, conclude and develop in the future, and a chance to restart from the very beginning. Whatever development it is, the university level, college level or academic level, each should have its own specials, which is also the main purpose of the evaluation. He also said that together with other members of the expert group and all the staff of HUAT, he would spare no effort to accomplish the task and try his best for the development of HUAT as well.

Then the experts group watched a video about HUAT to have a visual impression about HUAT. After expressing his sincere respect and warm welcome to the expert group on behalf of HUAT, professor and president Zhong Yuning made a report on the history and orientation of HUAT, achievements resulted from talents cultivation and statistics related to undergraduate programs. He said ever since its foundation, HUAT has gone through three stages of “start up in hardship, reform and grow, open and develop”. During the new period, HUAT would pay more attention to train advanced talents with special practical skills and insist on the road to run the university in opening ways, joint education and innovation so as speed up transferring development. He also said that HUAT was fully aware of the rare opportunity of undergraduate program evaluation for it to develop in the future. All the staff would also spare no effort to cooperate with the experts to find and solve the existing problems.
