On the morning of December 5, at the invitation of International Cooperation and Exchange Office(ICEO), Professor Thomas Roche, Director of English Language Project of Southern Cross University in Australia, came to HUAT to give a lecture on “How to succeed in an Australian university” in Teacher Development Center, and introduced to langue teachers the experience and successful ways of teaching TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and EAL (English as an Additional Language) in Australia. The lecture was chaired by Ma Xun, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Su Zibo, Deputy Director. Some teachers and students of Foreign Languages College and representatives of Australian schools participated in the lecture.
Professor Thomas Roche has been engaged in English teaching for many years. He has experience in teaching English in many countries and regions. At the lecture, Professor Thomas Roche introduced in detail how to achieve success in Australian universities from four aspects: learning plan, time management, academic ability and English proficiency. Professor Thomas Roche also led us to make a detailed analysis and heated discussion on the relevant issues. He then briefly introduced the Australian Academic English Path Programs (EAP Pathway Programs), TESOL development, curriculum system, academic evaluation, and the classification of the European Common Reference Framework (CEFR).
All the participants were fully involved in the lecture. At the end of the lecture, teachers and students began to ask questions about their own interests. Professor Roche kindly gave answers and guidance to each question. The atmosphere was relaxing and active. The lecture broadened the horizons of teachers and students, and stimulated the enthusiasm of overseas research and further study.
