On the afternoon of December 30, Joel Quinton, foreign language teacher from IAE, was invited by the International Cooperation and Exchange Office to give a lecture entitled "Implementing an oral conversation-based language teaching/learning approach using photographs as an integral part of its activation" in Classroom 1310 of Faculty Development Center. The lecture was hosted by Su Zibo, deputy director of ICEO, and teachers from College of Foreign Language attended the lecture.
Mr. Quinton is the French foreign teacher in HUAT this year and has taught French in Jamaica. During the lecture, Mr. Quinton used the concepts of "signifier & signified" and "connotation & denotation" of structural linguistics to point out the positive induction effect of picture representation on language communication, as well as his teaching experience of many years with several examples of using pictures as a teaching method to stimulate learners' interest in study.
After the lecture, some teachers had an in-depth exchange with Mr. Quinton on the teaching methodology.
This lecture is of positive significance to enhance the international atmosphere in HUAT and provides a new perspective for language teachers to explore oral teaching methods.
