On the afternoon of September 18th, Mr. Ian Smith, from the University of Bolton, UK, was appointed “visiting professor” of HUAT by the school’s vice President Jian Wei in the room 1305, CFD. Other leaders present at the ceremony are Feng Ying, Dean of the College of Automotive Engineering; Director and deputy director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Office, Ma Xun and Su Zibo, and some teachers from HUAT. The ceremony was hosted by Sino-British program coordinator Zheng Dongli.
At the ceremony, Zheng Dongli gave a detailed introduction to Professor Ian Smith. Ph.D., who graduated from Heriot Watt University with the degree in Engineering, now is a fellow of the UK’s Higher Education Academy and a Geotechnical and Educational Consultant with over 25 years’ experience of teaching and researching in the UK higher education, during which he reached the senior academic position of Dean of the School of Engineering and the Built Environment and Professor of Learning and Teaching at Edinburgh Napier University. Professor Ian Smith has extensive experience in teaching, and has worked in France, Spain, Ireland, etc. He is currently the coordinator of Sino-British cooperation project between the University of Bolton and HUAT, who has also been a teacher of HUAT Sino-British program.
Vice President Jian Wei offered an appointment letter to Professor Ian Smith. Afterwards, On behalf of HUAT, he expressed warm congratulations to Professor Ian Smith for being a visiting professor. He also hoped that the College of Automotive Engineering and Professor Ian Smith would work closely together to further strengthen the talent cultivation of HUAT and attract more teachers and students to participate in the Sino-British program and benefit from it. Professor Ian Smith is very delighted to be a visiting professor of HUAT and said that he will work hard to conduct collaborative research with HUAT and strengthen the academic exchanges.
Subsequently, at the invitation of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office, Professor Ian Smith participated in a micro-salon and gave a lecture entitled Building Confidence to Teach in English. Combined with his rich experience and deep thoughts in higher education for many years, Professor Ian Smith vividly discussed the basic connotation of teaching English as Medium of Instruction (EMI), the use of English as a global language and how to effectively promote students' classroom learning and other important topics of contemporary international education. During the lecture, teachers are always asking questions about their own interesting parts. Professor Ian Smith used his own experience as an example to answer them in detail.
The ceremony and micro salon played an important role in promoting talent training, scientific research, discipline construction, and international exchange and cooperation of HUAT.
