Department of Physical Education (PE) Overview The Physical Education (PE) Department, which was founded in 1996 as a division for the administration of basic courses, became an independent faculty in June 2001. In May 2021, it changed its name to the Physical Education Department. Currently, it is responsible for the teaching and governance of courses related to physical education, and other sports-related activities. It is consisted of a Teaching Office, an Athlete Training Office and a Physical Performance Testing Lab.
Teaching and Learning We have twenty-one faculty members, including 2 Professors, 10 Associate Professors, 6 Lecturers, and 3 Assistant. All of our teachers are highly professional and responsible in their teaching, and are willing to provide social services. Guided by the student-centered and fitness-first principle, we aim to promote students' physical and mental health, to transfer knowledge for health and exercise skills. We give paramount importance to the students’ individual development, focus on cultivating students’ habit and taste for physical exercise. We offer basic PE courses for the freshmen and sophomores. For the freshmen, we offer compulsory courses including track and field training course, physical exercises and sports games, football, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and lion dancing. For the sophomores, 11 sports courses were offered for their selection, including soccer, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, aerobics, martial arts, orienteering and ultimate frisbee. A total of 9 competitive sports programs are offered for all grades, including football, basketball, table tennis, badminton, aerobics, cheerleading, Lion Dance, track and field, and dart sports. In recent years, we conducted a series of reforms to improve our teaching efficiency and to serve the students’ needs. For example, a large-scale online PE classes were given in 2020, because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, online and offline hybrid teaching mode was adopted for the same reason. For years, we have been dedicated to serving the needs of our students. And we have strived to extend physical fitness exercise of PE classes beyond the limits of classrooms by organizing various forms of activities promotes the development of mass sports activities in the University. We promote self-service and self-management in students’ sports, provide technical guidance, referee services, venue equipment and other support in the organization of activities to ensure the smooth running of all activities. Mass sports activities in schools have been flourishing for a long time. We have carried out dozens of mass sports activities such as university-level sports meeting, winter long-distance running, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, and sports competitions between colleges and schools etc. We have been actively involved in various sports activities at the provincial and municipal levels. We actively organize and participate in various sports competitions at provincial and municipal levels.
Sport Competitions and Athlete Training We encourage our students to participate in various sport competitions. For this purpose, we have set up a coach team to help student athletes with their training. The training of sports teams is managed in a unified way, with teachers leading the training and students training on their own, highlighting individual characteristics, promoting the improvement of training levels with competitions inside and outside the school so as to attract more students to get involved in physical training and exercise. Our student athletes have won many awards in different sport competitions. For example, the martial arts team has won many gold, silver and bronze medals since 2002. Other teams, including the track and field team, men's volleyball team, soccer team and orienteering team have also won a number of medals. In 2003, we successfully hosted the Bridge Tournament of College Students in Hubei Province and won the First Prize for women's team competition.
Academic and Research We encourage our teachers to engage in scientific research by building research teams, promoting teaching reforms and creating a productive academic environment. We keep records of teachers’ annul publications, give paramount importance to research, and take academic achievements as one of the criteria of evaluation. At the same time, we regularly organize seminars and lectures, as well as inviting in scholars and sending teachers out for academic exchanges. We have formed various research teams based on different teaching units. We have been tracking and analyzing students’ fitness and health status for better teaching strategies. In recent years, teachers of the PE Department have published dozens of papers and undertaken more than ten research projects. Mission and Vision Statement Physical Education (PE) is a required academic subject that teaches participation in lifelong, health-enhancing physical activity. In our department, students learn to work as a team, develop healthy personal fitness habits, and set fitness goals now and throughout their lives. We aim to create a healthy and better physical and mental foundation for a lifelong learning for our students. We will continue to deepen the teaching reform, improve the teaching standards and build a number of sports teams that are influential in the provincial universities. Above all, we will work continuously to promote our students’ holistic health and to cultivate a culture of physical fitness excellence. |
